To maintain your high quality Mr. Bar-B-Q cast iron properly, DO NOT wash in a dishwasher or use harsh detergents, which will remove the seasoning. Instead soak it for several minutes in hot water and scrub with a plastic scouring pad or nylon brush. Dry thoroughly right away to prevent rusting and apply a thin coat of oil prior to storing. With first time use until seasoning is built up, use a little extra oil to prevent foods sticking. Avoid acidic foods like tomatoes, beans and certain sauces until seasoning is well established. Always store in a dry place.
If you see small amounts of rust not to worry, this can occur if the seasoning is removed or exposed to moisture. Simply scrub area with a plastic scouring pad or nylon brush, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Apply oil to the area to prevent it from rusting again. For larger amounts of rust you will need to restore it with these easy steps:
- Use a brush to remove rust and wash with hot water and soap, then dry.
- Coat the entire surface (inside and out) with a thin layer of oil.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour with item upside down and aluminum foil underneath it.
- Turn off the oven and let cool in a dry place and repeat process if necessary.
